ManagEnergy is a technical support initiative of the Intelligent Energy - Europe (IEE) programme of the European Commission which aims to assist actors from the public sector and their advisers working on energy efficiency and renewable energy at the local and regional level. More specifically, the initiative is targeted at:

  • Local and regional energy agencies
  • Local and regional public authority energy specialists
  • Urban planners and elected officials (municipal, provincial and regional), especially signatories to the Covenant of Mayors (www.eumayors.eu).
  • Other local and regional organizations with a public mission that are working on sustainable energy

The ManagEnergy initiative includes:

  • The ManagEnergy website, which offers databases on case studies and good practices as well as a directory of energy agencies
  • Information on relevant European policy and legislation
  • Electronic newsletters
  • Capacity building workshops
  • Other networking facilities, such as online events, an Annual Conference and awards

The website includes a partner search system containing some 4000 organisations, including almost 475 energy agencies, which can provide valuable expertise and partnerships on energy initiatives at local and regional levels.

The Education Corner section (www.learn-energy.net) provides educational resources for children (under 11), young adults (12-16) and their teachers in 27 languages. This section includes the new ManagEnergy Database of Energy Education Resources, encompassing vocational training in the Sustainable Energy field (available in 2011).

ManagEnergy Good Practice Brochures

Good Practice Collection / Publication [EN] Every year, ManagEnergy rewards some of the most outstanding energy actions at the local and regional level with the Local Energy Action Award.

Good practice case studies are selected, through an annual call, for their strong contribution to the promotion of sustainable energy and for their high potential for replication.

ManagEnergy Workshops Programme - Estonia Workshop Conclusions

Conclusions [EN] It can be done! That was the inspirational message from the Mayor of Rakvere city, Mr Andres Jaadla, showing other Estonian municipalities how Rakvere’s political determination and “can-do” approach to creating a sustainable energy city has seen Rakvere become the country’s standard bearer in terms of financing and implementing sustainable energy projects from its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP).

ManagEnergy Capacity Building Workshop: Horsens, Denmark, September 2012

Film / Animation [EN] In Denmark, progress on the Covenant of Mayors initiative has taken place mostly in the region of Zealand in the eastern part of the country. This ManagEnergy workshop targeted municipalities in the west of Denmark - Jutland and Funen.

The goal was to help enable these municipalities to take the appropriate steps toward Sustainable Energy Action Plans, while exploring how this process can best be supported at the regional level through cross-municipal experience exchange and the organisation of joint sustainable energy projects.

ManagEnergy Map of National, Regional and Local Energy Agencies in Europe

Map [EN] This map on the ManagEnergy websiste shows the location of energy agencies throughout Europe. Local and regional energy agencies (LAREAs) support the introduction of good energy management practices, advocate the concept of sustainability, provide information and guidance, and offer a number of other local services based on specific local energy needs.

  • ManagEnergy Workshop
    Stimulating SEAP development in Wielkopolska Region

    17-18 October 2012, Poznan, Wielkopolska Region, Poland

    The scope of the workshop was to build capacities of authorities and related stakeholders in the Wielkopolska Region to design and implement sustainable energy actions. It was organised in joint cooperation of the regional authority in the Marshal Office UMWW, the regional energy agency WAZE and EC Network and took place in Poznan, 17-18 October 2012.

    Eight municipalities in Wielkopolska (municipalities of: Golina, Szamotuly, Czarnkow, Lubasz, Krotoszyn, Kalisz, Przykona, Poznan), one representative of the regional authority UMWW, four representatives of the regional energy agency WAZE and around 10 other stakeholders (consultants, researchers or from the financial sector) participated the workshop.

    Quantification and reporting on energy & climate on a territory: Focus on the cadastral method

    6 October 2011, Paris, France

    France counts 127 Covenant of Mayors signatories. The workshop targeted cities, energy agencies and other interested stakeholders who lack information on energy quantification and reporting obligations required within the Covenant Sustainable Energy Action Plan. Experts from the European Joint Research Centre and national stakeholders forged links between national schemes, initiatives and existing tools and those offered by the Covenant of Mayors

    The Role of Municipalities in Implementing and Financing Sustainable Energy Policy

    15 September 2011, Kaunas, Lithuania

    The workshop focused on energy planning and utilising ESCOs and Structural and Cohesion Funds for energy efficiency projects in the municipal building sector. It also provided an insight into the National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) and its implications. It included expert presentations and good practice examples, as well as interactive discussion sessions between the participants and speakers.

    ManagEnergy held a capacity building workshop in Riga on 28 January 2011.
