Summary
[EN - English]
On Santorini island, in the coastline of the bays of Perissa, Perivolos, Agios Georgios, 115 steel street lighting poles with low efficient lamps were replaced by new ones, made of recyclable plastic, with high efficient lamps. The new poles do not need yearly maintenance (painting), and the new lamps consume 67% less energy than the old ones.
Aims and Objectives of this Sustainable Energy Action
In the framework of the development of sustainable actions, the municipality of Santorini installed 115 new street lighting poles, with high efficient lamps, in the place of the old ones. Under the submitted SEAP, the municipality is aiming to replace all the old lamps of the public lighting system of the island with new, more efficient lamps.
The main objective of this action is to reduce the electricity consumption from public lighting, as well as to improve the quality of the equipment and the aesthetic view of the coastline landscape.
Results and Impacts
- Energy savings: 40296 [kWhel/year]
- Economic savings: 4.433 €/year\
- CO2-savings: 23,48 ton/year
Technical and Financial Implementation
The old 60W lamps were replaced by new, more efficient, 20W lamps. Thus the energy consumption is reduced by 40W, or 66,6 %. That means a reduction of 40.296 kWh/year in electricity consumption and 23,48 tonnes CO2/year.
As Santorini is a non-interconnected island, the environmental benefit is even higher taking into account that energy production is very polluting, due to the use of heavy oil as a fuel in the autonomous conventional electricity power stations.
The Partners and Stakeholders
Municipality of Santorini, Region of South Aegean
Lessons Learnt
The municipality decided to replace all the old, low energy efficient lamps in its territory.
This action helped the behavioral change of the citizens, as they faced the necessity of energy saving and the benefits of the replacement of old, low energy efficient lighting systems with new, more efficient.
How this Action could be Replicated
Financial support by the Operational program for the Environment and Sustainable Development can initiate new applications in all municipalities of the Cycladic islands.
