ENNEREG Good Practice

Integrated energy savings plan at Rhodes - ENNEREG Good Practice

The aim of this Action is the implementation of an integrated plan of interventions to specific sectors of infrastructures of the Municipality of Rhodes, with a view to energy savings and better management of energy resources in buildings - public spaces.

Summary

[EN - English]

Maximising energy savings in municipality level and reaching high energy efficiency levels at every aspect of public infrastructures (public buildings, public lighting, transportation etc.) are crucial challenges currently faced by the EU Communities.

The aim of this Action is the implementation of an integrated plan of interventions to specific sectors of infrastructures of the Municipality of Rhodes, with a view to energy savings and better management of energy resources in buildings - public spaces. Particularly, the main axes of the plan are:

  • Axis 1: Interventions in existing municipal buildings
  • Axis 2: Interventions in public areas of the urban environment
  • Axis 3: Dissemination activities, networking and publication of the actions

Aims and Objectives of this Sustainable Energy Action

The Project is designed to reduce the steeply increasing energy needs, as well as to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions in the island’s territory. The buildings that were selected for energy retrofitting were old, big, with high-level energy consumption, which are used by high numbers of people (e.g. schools).

As far as the urban environment is concerned, the action foresees the replacement of old and low efficient public lighting equipment with new of high energy and quality standards, as well as a study for the improvement of urban mobility. Moreover, a series of dissemination actions will spread the results of the action and raise public awareness regarding energy savings and climate change.

Results and Impacts

  • Energy Saving:  1198 MWh-primary energy
  • Energy Saving:  36%
  • CO2 savings:  320 tonnes/year

Technical and Financial Implementation

As Rhodes is a non interconnected island, the environmental benefit of the energy savings (electricity) is even higher taking into account that energy production in those islands is very polluting, because of the use of heavy oil in the conventional power stations.

The project will be implemented by the financial support of the National Strategic Reference Framework.

The Partners and Stakeholders

Municipality of Rhodes, Region of South Aegean

Lessons Learnt

Integrated energy saving plans in community level, apart from the environmental benefits, contributes also to the consciousness of citizens and users of the renovated infrastructures (e.g. students of retrofitted schools).

The National Strategic Reference Framework covered the financial gap.

How this Action could be Replicated

Similar actions are being planned in other Aegean islands by the financial support of the National Strategic Reference Framework.
