Summary
[EN - English]
On Syros island, photovoltaic (PV) systems have been installed in 12 autonomous systems at various points of a picturesque village, Poseidonia. It was an initiative of the former Mayor of Poseidonia in Syros island, under the Covenant of Mayors Initiative.
Aims and Objectives of this Sustainable Energy Action
In the framework of the development of sustainable actions, the municipality of Poseidonia in Syros island installed 12 street lights with PV. Under the submitted SEAP, the municipality is aiming to install 500 items and phase out the conventional ones.
Results and Impacts
- Energy savings: 127750 [kWh/year]
- Economic savings: 15330 €/year
- CO2-savings: 132860 /year
The major impact of the action was the public awareness regarding the Solar energy and Energy efficiency.
Those systems can be ideally installed in conserved places where electric cables would harm the aesthetic view and underground cables would be too expensive.
Technical and Financial Implementation
Energy saving: 43,8 Kwh/year
CO2 emissions saving: 39,86kg/year
Cost for 1 lampshade: 1000 €
Operational cost: 30,66€/year
The payback time of the energy is lees than 18 years, while the payback time of CO2 savings is less than 8 years. The periodical replacement of the accumulator every 5 years has been included in the above calculations.
As Syros is a non-interconnected island, the environmental benefit is even higher taking into account that energy production in those islands is very polluting.
In the first year and with efficient lamps the energy benefit was not over the limit. The replacement of the lamps with LEDs will improve that benefit.
The Partners and Stakeholders
Region of South Aegean, Municipalities, public.
Lessons Learnt
The municipality decided to double the units in its territory. But in order to replace all the lamps, the island must be interconnected with the mainland grid.
Vice governor Mr. Makryonitis, in an interview, stated that this action helped the behavioural change of the citizens, as they faced the necessity of energy saving and the benefits of the conversion of solar energy to electricity.
The vice governor supports that the more those systems are evolved the more their performance increases.
How this Action could be Replicated
Financial support by the Operational program for the Environment and Sustainable Development can initiate new applications in all municipalities of the Cycladic islands.
PV lampshades have been installed in the island of Symi, in the Dodecanese region which is twinned with the Cyclades as part of the ENNEREG project.
