The journey begins...

In May 2010, 12 ENNEREG “Pioneers”started on their journey to become Sustainable Energy Regions

These ENNEREG Regions, which range from islands in Greece and Portugal to the whole of Wales, have been developing and implementing Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) and Projects (SEPs), exchanging experiences and lessons learned in the process.

The 12 regional partnerships in Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom have made a coordinated approach in defining visions and goals suited to the local policy context, the region’s resources and the interests of stakeholders. This has led, among others, to the elaboration of Sustainable Energy Action Plans and the implementation of selected sustainable energy projects in each region as well as to the launch of Covenant of Mayors’ Supporting Structures.

ENNEREG activities in the Pioneer Regions

  • Stimulating stakeholder involvement in their regions
  • Identifying good practice and lessons learnt in their own and other pioneer regions
  • Setting regional visions and goals
  • Formulating short and long term Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs)
  • Fostering specific investments and end-use measures for Sustainable Energy Projects (SEPs)

As well as learning from their shared experience, the ENNEREG Pioneers have tapped into the wealth of knowledge gained by other pioneer regions throughout Europe that had already been developing and implementing Sustainable Energy actions.

Experience from the ENNEREG Pioneer Regions

The 12 ENNEREG Pioneers have not only worked in their own regions, but have also been:

  • sharing their experiences as they progress, both on a one-to-one basis through direct interaction with ENNEREG Twin Regions, as well as through this website and the Regions 202020 Network and ENNEREG Twin Regionsthroughout Europe.
  • providing step-by-step information on how regions can develop and implement their SEAPs and SEPs
  • identifying good practice and learning from other Pioneer Sustainable Energy Regions throughout Europe

By sharing experiences, the ENNEREG Pioneer Regions have aimed to inspire and guide other “Replication” regions to become a key driving force in fulfilling the EU 20-20-20 climate and energy targets.

Inspiration Guide for Regional Decision-makers - Report from the ENNEREG Pioneer Regions

Each ENNEREG Pioneer Regions has produced a report on their experiences which and represent the contribution of the Regional Partners to the ENNEREG Inspiration Guide for Regional Decision-makers. These reports form part of a series of publications from the ENNEREG project that have the objective of disseminating to a broad European audience what has come out of the ENNEREG intervention in the Regions.
