The Sustainable Energy Communities (SEC) set up within the framework of City_SEC project, and composed of municipalities involved in Italy, Hungary, Greece, Sweden, Poland and Croatia, organized a joint initiative, “City_SEC project Zero Emission Day” on the occasion of EUSEW - EU Sustainable Energy Week 2011.

The initiative included a wide range of training, promotion and dissemination activities organized by the project partners with the involvement of municipalities that joined the City_SEC project, with the aim to sensitize and increase awareness of citizens on energy savings behaviours and promote the shift to a more sustainable lifestyle.

“Marche Region Zero Emission Days”, cycle of workshops and conferences, to raise the environmental and sustainable energy awareness of local communities

Brief description of the programme/initiative: all Marche Region City_SEC

Municipalities organized an event, like a conference, a workshop, a contest or an exhibition, in their territory during the EUSEW, aimed to sensitize citizenship on the environmental and sustainability issues and on the importance to act at local level to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumptions.

The events will focus on different topics: clean vehicles and ecodriving, “CO2 free” buildings, visit to local renewable energy systems, promotion and educational activities with primary and secondary schools, Covenant of Mayors initiative.

Workshop on renewable energy and energy efficiency – raising awareness workshops onthose topics. City_SEC Project Zero Emission Day

Brief description of the programme/initiative: The City_SEC Project Zero Emission Day took place at the premises of Istrian Development Agency on April 14th 2011. The Conference aimed to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy resources as well as to raise awareness on the importance of
reduction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

The topics to be addressed during the Conference were:

  • “Energy Efficiency in business environment and renewable energy resources”
  • “Funding opportunities - EBRD TAMBAS PROGRAMME”
  • “Energy Management in Croatia”

Organiser: REACM - Development Agency of Eastern Thessaloniki’s local authorities - Greece

Municipalities involved: Edessa, Kalamaria, Neapolis-Sykeon, Pavlos Melas, Pilea-Hortiatis

Brief description of the programme/initiative: The 5 Municipalities of the City_SEC of the Region of Central Macedonia organized information events and workshops to raise awareness of local communities, in the frame of EUSEW (11-15 April 2011). More specifically, awareness material with “Tips for Energy Saving” will be distributed to the public visiting the City-Hall and the Citizens’ Service Centers of each Municipality, while workshops will take place for children of primary schools. The workshops entitled “Lets all help to save our planet”, aimed to make students aware of environmental impacts of fossil energy  over-consumption and encourage them to shift towards a more energy efficient lifestyle. Moreover, on 14th April 2011, a press conference was held to officially formalize the “City_SEC of the Region of Central Macedonia” and promote the initiative of the 5 City_SEC Municipalities to combat climate change. The press conference was followed by the Conference “Local Authorities & Energy: Utilization of solar energy in municipal buildings and facilities” co-organised with the “Wide the SEE by Succ Mod” project of SEE Programme.

Take care of environment since you are young, training meeting for pupils

Organiser: ARR.SA - Regional Development Agency of Bielsko Biala - Poland

Date of the event: 11 - 15 April 2011

Municipality involved: Bielsko-Biala

Brief description of the programme/initiative: Organization of 10 training sessions for pupils from 3 Bielsko-Biala schools. During the training meeting pupils learnt how to care of the environment and gained the information about renewable energy sources. Moreover, pupils watched a movie about environmental protection and ecology in daily life (an educational movie) and there were presentations about these topics. Practical activities were a final phase of the meeting. All pupils prepared a poster “what can I do to protect environment?” Posters will be posted up in schools.

Municipality involved: Högsby

Event: Brief description of the programme/initiative: The energy consumption in a building depends not only of the type of the building, the installed technology, insulation and electrical appliances. Also the daily behaviour and habits influences the consumption. Therefore schools in Högsby were invited to join a competition to reduce the energy consumption including teachers, staff and children. This workshop was an introduction of the method and the background of climate change, energy consumption and renewable energy sources and gave practical advice on how to join the competition and how to combine this knowledge in the daily education to the pupils.

Brief description of the programme/initiative: Everyone wants more money in their wallet. One good way to do this is to save energy in the home day to day. This can leave you with plenty more money in your wallet every year. And as well as making your housekeeping money stretch further, you are helping to create a better environment, so that future generations can have the chance to live in a long-term sustainable society. The local energy and climate advisers and energy experts taught useful ways to save energy at home.

Study tour for pupils 11- 12 years old.” My choice – our common future – a visit to the local science center in Kalmar

Brief description of the programme/initiative: The local science center in Kalmar eXperimentLabbet has an exhibition with the topics energy savings, energy consumption and renewable energy sources. The pupils (11-12 years old – Fårboskolan) in one class were invited to visit the exhibition. It is a full day with bus Oskarshamn – Kalmar. The local energy and climate advisers guided the children in the exhibition.

Zero Emission Days in North Hungary

Organiser: NORDA - Regional Development Agency of North Hungary

Brief description of the Programme/initiative: The conference aimed to giving a rational and concrete approach to the issue of climate change. It aimd to increase the knowledge on how to contribute to the energy efficiency measures undertaken by the municipalities, on the renewable energy production and use. There were accompanying events like exhibition of energy saving cars and other programmes for education institutions in order to communicate the importance of sustainable energy behavior.
