The sector's own numbers point the same way: Energy UK's retail energy-efficiency work treats demand reduction as the cheapest unit of energy there is, and research on building retrofits — like the heat-loss field trials covered by ScienceDaily — keeps finding that measured performance tracks the boring basics: insulation depth, airtightness, and heating run at the right temperature. That is where the savings actually come from.

What improves home energy efficiency the most?

Per pound spent: loft insulation first, cavity wall insulation second, then heating controls. Heat pumps and solar panels deliver the biggest absolute cuts but need the fabric measures done first to perform at their price.

What grants exist for home energy efficiency in 2026?

The Warm Homes Plan replaced ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme in March 2026 for insulation measures, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a heat pump, and VAT on solar and batteries is zero-rated until March 2027.

What order should I do the work in?

Fabric first: loft, then walls, then draught-proofing and controls. Electrify after that — a heat pump sized for an insulated house is smaller and cheaper to run — and add solar whenever the roof allows; it stands on its own economics.

How much can a typical house save?

A gas-heated semi going from poor to good — insulated loft and walls, a smart thermostat, flow temperature set right — typically cuts £400–£600 a year at current prices before any heat pump or solar investment.
