ENNEREG - Regions 202020 paving the way for a Sustainable Energy Europe

Author: Katy HALL, ENNEREG Communications Officer, CPL Scientific Publishing Services Ltd, United Kingdom -

Map showing 12 ENNEREG Pioneer RegionsENNEREG Regions paving the way for a Sustainable Energy Europe aims to establish and inspire a network of regions throughout Europe – Regions 202020 - to produce regional Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) and implement Sustainable Energy Projects (SEPs).

12 ENNEREG Pioneers

In May 2010, 12 ENNEREG “Pioneers” started on their journey to become Sustainable Energy Regions. These ENNEREG Regions, which range from islands in Greece and Portugal to the whole of Wales, will undertake SEAP and SEP development and implementation, exchanging experiences and lessons learned in the process.

The activities of the ENNEREG Pioneers will include:

  • Stimulating stakeholder involvement in their regions
  • Identifying good practice and lessons learnt in their own and other pioneer regions
  • Setting regional visions and goals
  • Formulating short and long term Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs)
  • Fostering specific investments and end-use measures for Sustainable Energy Projects (SEPs)

The ENNEREG Project kicked-off in June with a meeting and study tour in Sweden and Denmark. Visits to sustainable energy sites included district heating plant and energy efficient glass works in Växjö, a sustainability tour of the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen and a presentation on building improvements and energy savings in the municipality of Middelfart’s buildings.

Good practice studies from these and other regions, as well as example SEAPs, SEPs, tools and lessons learnt will be made available in a database linked to an interactive Inspiration Guide on the Regions 202020 website as the project progresses. These resources, and the activities of the ENNEREG Regions, will focus on eight key Sustainable Energy themes:

  • Energy efficient buildings
  • Energy efficiency in industry
  • Energy efficient products
  • Sustainable transport
  • Renewable energy
  • Energy services
  • Intelligent energy education
  • Energy monitoring
